A sales decline is a signal, not a diagnosis. The same drop can require completely different actions depending on what changed underneath.

A CA$130 product. 4.6 stars. A growing category. 3 units sold in 32 days.
At first glance, it looked like a traffic problem. It wasn’t.
I recently completed a 22-section audit of an Amazon.ca listing that, based on the category and competitive benchmarks, should have been capable of doing 400+ units a month. It had a competitive price, a stronger-than-average rating, and one of the richest accessory bundles in the category. Yet almost nobody could find it.
Part 1: Could People Find It?
- The listing ranked on page 1 for zero keywords.
- 54 correctly built PPC campaigns were sitting paused.
- Live ad spend was concentrated in untargeted auto campaigns.
So the account had a visibility problem, but was still spending money.
Part 2: What Happened After the Click?
CTR was above the market average across all three variants. People who saw the listing were clicking. But conversion was 0% against a roughly 5% market benchmark for the same search terms. There was a second problem hiding after the click:
- Buy Box lost to a third-party reseller on 2 of 3 variants
- A $3 price difference between variants
- Six unresolved gallery image defects
- One image showing a component that wasn’t actually included in the package
This wasn’t a product problem or a demand problem. It was an execution problem.
The Recommendation
Not “spend more on PPC.” Instead: stop the spend leaks → fix distribution → restore price consistency → repair trust and conversion → then re-measure before scaling. If conversion is broken, more traffic can simply buy more expensive failure.
The 22-Section Audit Framework
Every section follows: Data → Current State → Benchmark → Gap → Root Cause → Opportunity → Priority → Action → Expected Impact → KPI → Decision.
Sometimes the most valuable conclusion from an audit is not what you should do next. It’s what you should stop doing.
Want to run this kind of audit yourself? I’ve published the step-by-step process, with the six data sources and the full checklist, in the Amazon listing optimization playbook.
